Green Day’s American Idiot will be performed at this year’s Great Gig in the Sky, which will take place at 7:00 PM on Friday, April 21 and Saturday, April 22 at the Claudia Boettcher Theatre. As always, this year’s event promises to be high energy!
The show is the latest installment of an interdisciplinary performance project. Students collaborate to re-create an iconic music album in its entirety through a live performance. This year, 100 students and faculty set their sights on American Idiot, a concept album and punk rock opera about an adolescent coming of age during the disillusionment and dissent of a generation engendered by the Iraq war.
Throughout the year, performers and artists immerse themselves in the music and style of the album and rehearse across ensembles and disciplines to find synergy in the final preparations, leading up to a live performance. The result is a combination of instruments and voices, lights, lasers and projected video that create a unique experience for the performers and audience alike.
In previous years, the project experienced tremendous success with performances of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Michael Jackson's Thriller, Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours and Beck’s Odelay.
