Robotics Team Earns Top Award at Tournament

A Masters robotics team received the Honor Award – the highest award presented – at the recent CREATE Open Division Tournament in Iowa.

The Phi team received this recognition during the CREATE Foundation's end-of-season tournaments, held from April 7-9 at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, IA. Both the Phi squad and Masters’ Sigma team qualified to compete in the event by winning the Harvey Winter Classic in mid-February. Representing Masters were Katie Accetta, Zach Battleman, Alex Feiner, Nicole Ferrando, Cole Feuer, Teddy Hoisington, Evelyn Sabety and Henry Williams.

The Open Division Tournament was a 45-team, multi-platform robotics exhibition for teams from across the United States that wanted to try their hand at a more challenging level of robotics, says John Chiodo, engineering teacher and robotics coach.

Since the rules permitted the use of any robotics kit, equipment or parts, Masters’ teams needed to make modifications to their existing robots just to remain competitive. “Both squads put in a tremendous amount of effort preparing their robots for this unique competition,” Mr. Chiodo says. “This required many hours of work after the regular VEX robotics season was over for the year. That alone is commendable.”

After a day of qualification matches, both Masters teams advanced to the elimination round. Unfortunately, the squads ended up in different three-team alliances. The Sigma squad advanced to the quarter-finals before it was eliminated by a three-team alliance that included Masters’ Phi squad.

The Phi team was then eliminated in the semi-finals. Despite that loss, the group earned the Honor Award, the highest award presented in CREATE Robotics, according to Mr. Chiodo. The squad was recognized as a team that excelled in all aspects of competitive robotics, including field performance, technical knowledge, interviews and interaction with all teams, fans and tournament officials.
