Inaugural Musical Revue a Hit

A cast of 16 Upper School students took the stage in the Experimental Theater on Friday, February 1, and Saturday, February 2, for the School’s first musical revue, entitled Doors: A Musical Exploration.

The show, which featured 21 songs from a variety of musicals, was an opportunity for students interested in musical theatre to develop soloist skills and was also ideal for those whose time commitments precluded them from taking part in the mainstage musical in February.

The addition of this performance is also a recognition of community interest, said Chair of the Department of Performing Arts Jen Carnevale. “The revue represents an intentionally growing presence of musical theatre instruction in our program … [and] support[s] and expand[s] opportunities for young artist development in this area.”

George Croom, a private music lesson instructor at Masters who directed the show, noted that the creation of the performance was highly collaborative: students were integral to the formation of the revue, from providing feedback on material to the ways in which they connected the songs into a coherent and compelling storyline. “The key,” Croom said, “was empowering each of them with the freedom to make changes, dare themselves and push themselves harder than they thought they could go.”

The result was a powerful story that combined songs from a variety of musicals. Reflecting on the experience, Croom said, “The journey was a real joy.”
