Peter Gisolfi Associates, the firm that designed the Fonseca Center for Athletics and Arts, has received an award for the project from the Westchester-Hudson Valley chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

The architectural firm, which is based in Hastings-on-Hudson, received a Citation award for its design of the Fonseca Center. The award will be officially presented at a ceremony on October 11 at the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, NY.

Peter Gisolfi, the founding partner of the firm, says the leadership of The Masters School deserves some of the credit for the building’s design. “There was a vision that Maureen Fonseca and other Masters School leaders had,” he said. “It was the vision of putting students together in new ways. This is a group of people who were trying to do something that was innovative and were committed to it.”

The trilevel, 75,000-square-foot Fonseca Center, which opened in September 2015, houses a mixture of arts, athletics and academic spaces under one roof. Its many glass walls and dynamic, open layout create a sense of community and enable students to see a variety of activities at once.

“That transparency is a kind of beckoning to the student body to get together,” Mr. Gisolfi says.

The complex features a state-of-the-art fencing studio, a fitness center, a suspended indoor running track, and a gymnasium with a regulation basketball court, two practice courts and two volleyball courts.

It also offers numerous places for students to meet, relax or watch ongoing activities, including a recreation area that overlooks the pool from the second floor. Another gathering place is the Davis Café, which opens onto a courtyard that has a southern exposure so that it is warmed by the sun during the winter.

The Center is a “green” facility, with solar panels on the natatorium (pool building) roof and the roof of the gym in the adjoining Strayer Hall, and double-insulated, low-E glass panels in the main gym’s windows and on the north side of the natatorium.
