Senior Olivia Johnke garnered four awards in the Northeast Art Region-at-Large competition of the 2018 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program.
In the drawing and illustration category, Olivia received a Gold Key for her piece titled “A Cellular Sight”; a Silver Key for her work, “Little Fish in a Big Pond”; and an Honorable Mention for her piece, “Stamp Shop.” She also received an Honorable Mention for her collective portfolio of seven artworks, titled “Illustrating the Observed World.”
Gold Key-winning artworks are automatically forwarded for consideration at the national level of the competition, which is sponsored by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. Nationally renowned creative professionals review Gold Key pieces from across the country, according to the Alliance. Jurors select works for national recognition based on three criteria: originality, technical skill, and emergence of a personal vision or voice.
The Alliance’s mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their work to the public through the awards program. Through the awards, students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication and scholarships. Students across the United States submitted nearly 350,000 original works this year in 29 different categories of art and writing.
