The Arts at Masters
The arts play a vital role at The Masters School. Fully integrated into the curriculum and the life of the School, they also feature prominently in co-curricular's and student performance groups. Opportunities to study the arts—both during the day and after school—abound. Dance and drama, painting and photography, music in its countless forms—we offer it all and encourage our students to explore.
In the School’s sunlight-filled, two-story art studio, students work at drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking, and they put the professional ceramics studio to good use. The performing arts flourish here too: choral, jazz, rock and classical ensembles, as well as numerous dance ensembles, and theater courses and productions.
ARTS FOR ALL
Masters doesn’t wait until high school to encourage participation in the arts. Our Middle School offers many curricular and co-curricular arts opportunities. Arts classes are taught four times per week, with instruction in piano, music theory, composition, world music, drawing, painting, puppetry, photography, and more. Middle School co-curricular groups include three rock bands, jazz band, orchestra, choir, percussion ensemble, and musical theater troupe.
Once in the Upper School, our ninth grade Arts Lab course includes a sequence of dance, drama, visual art and music studies. There are also nine curricular music ensembles, seven student-run ensembles, plus cross-disciplinary opportunities, such as The Great Gig in the Sky and On Location. Students can also enroll in intensive private lessons — there is no limit to the breadth and depth of artistic instruction students can receive.
NEW YORK, NEW YORK
The School’s proximity to New York City is an immeasurable advantage. Students frequently attend plays, musicals, opera and other performances. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Metropolitan Opera, the Museum of Modern Art, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Whitney Museum of American Art are just a few of the world- class institutions awaiting a visit.
ADVANCEMENT AND PRE-PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Advanced students are able to stretch themselves at Masters and excel at their art. We offer opportunities to write and direct plays, compose and produce music, create art portfolios and gallery shows, and choreograph dances.
In addition to the myriad arts opportunities at Masters, students frequently take advantage of intensive pre-professional programs in New York City and throughout Westchester County. Currently, Masters students train with several prestigious programs, including the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College, Julliard, and Mannes College Preparatory Division, and well-regarded local schools: Hoff-Barthelson School of Music, Broadway Training Center of Westchester, Steffi Nossen School of Dance, Lagond Music School, and Westchester Music Conservatory. Additionally, Masters has affiliations with Westchester Symphonic Winds, Westchester Jazz Orchestra, and the Hudson Valley Singers. Masters partnered with the Chamber Music Center of New York to produce a Summer Chamber Music Camp on the Masters Campus. Masters graduates have gone on to pursue the arts at conservatories and as professional artists, dancers, musicians, and actors.
