Math Modeling Team Chosen to Represent U.S. in Contest

A Masters team has been selected as one of only two teams that will represent the United States in the fourth annual International Mathematical Modeling Challenge (IM2C).

The group was chosen from the 359 teams that represented the U.S. in the 2017 High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling contest. The team consists of Upper School students Noah Crooks, Miranda Luiz, Noah Roger and Henry Williams.

Masters' squad participated in the IM2C, a five-day competition in which students worked together at their school sites, during spring break this year. According to team coach John Chiodo, the group was required to develop a mathematical model to measure the quality of a hospital, ultimately resulting in information that could allow a non-technical user to make an educated decision as to where to seek treatment. The model had to be applicable either when comparing five local hospitals or when comparing 50 possible hospitals.

The team's IM2C solution paper will soon be published online, and will be recognized in professional journals worldwide, Mr. Chiodo says. In June, an international panel of experts will complete final judging of the papers submitted by each country's representative teams.

The Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP) recently announced that Masters' squad had made the cut to advance to the final round. A team from North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics was the other group chosen to represent the U.S, according to the Consortium.
