Masters Team Wins a Top Award in International Math Contest

The team has been invited to attend the awards ceremony in Melbourne, Australia from August 16-19. The group was chosen from the 359 teams that represented the U.S. in the 2017 High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling. Its members were Noah Crooks, Miranda Luiz, Noah Roger and Henry Williams — all members of the Class of 2018.

Thirty countries and regions were invited to participate in the 2018 IM2C and after the national/regional selection round, 55 teams competed in the international round of judging, according to the sponsors of the competition. Masters' team was the only American team to receive the Meritorious designation, the second-highest award given.

The squad participated in the IM2C, a five-day competition in which students worked together at their school sites, during spring break this year. According to team coach John Chiodo, the group was required to develop a mathematical model to measure the quality of a hospital, ultimately resulting in information that could allow a non-technical user to make an educated decision as to where to seek treatment. The model had to be applicable either when comparing five local hospitals or when comparing 50 possible hospitals.
