Panthers Take Second at Masters Volleyball Invitational

With an infusion of talent and numerous veteran players stepping up, the varsity girls’ volleyball squad is undoubtedly on the upswing.

The Panthers proved it at the third annual Masters Invitational Tournament on Saturday, September 15, finishing second out of six teams. It marked the program’s best finish in the tournament’s history.

“The team loved it,” assistant coach Mikelle Sacco said. “They would’ve liked to have won it, but I’m assuming that’s their goal for next year. They have the ability to because they are young. We are going to surprise some teams this year.”

Masters opened the tournament with a victory over Long Island Lutheran and topped Léman Manhattan Preparatory School in the semifinal round. The Panthers lost a hard-fought match to The Nightingale-Bamford School in the championship.

“We have some new talent that’s brought new life into the team,” Sacco said. “That’s definitely helped to make the team come together. We are a little stronger. Our other girls have started stepping up and are playing to their potential.”

Masters will host Horace Mann in its next match on Saturday, September 22 at the Fonseca Center.
