Varsity Athletics Highlight Upper School Family Weekend

A whopping five varsity athletic contests highlighted Upper School Family Weekend on Saturday, September 22. The boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer, girls’ volleyball, girls’ tennis and field hockey squads were all in action on campus from 1:00 to 5:00 PM.

The girls’ tennis team stole the show, edging Kennedy Catholic, 4-3, for its first victory of the young season. Katie Accetta and Anastasiia Gorobets both emerged victorious in singles, while the teams of Lola Rock/Alex Batson and Charlotte Benson/Callie Leff both notched wins in doubles.

The girls’ soccer team scratched out a hard-fought 3-3 draw against the Harvey School behind one goal apiece from JJ Marquez, Stephanie Sanchez and Ava Lederman. Keeper Francesca Mann spearheaded the defense with a number of eye-popping saves. The boys’ squad rebounded from an early 1-0 deficit to salvage a 1-1 tie against a talented opponent in the Packer Collegiate Institute. Grayam Church notched the Panthers’ lone goal.

Despite suffering a 2-0 setback against the Horace Mann School, there were some bright spots for the field hockey team. Nicole Newman stood on her head in net, recording an impressive 17 saves. Olivia Knowles and Madison Stewart each added a defensive save. The girls’ volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match against the Horace Mann School.
