Varsity Boys' Soccer Cruises Past Harvey

The varsity boys’ soccer squad was in search of a goal-hungry finisher heading into a midweek match against the visiting Harvey School.

Grayam Church '21 answered the call.

The sophomore striker bagged a pair of goals, powering Masters to a convincing 4-1 victory at Greene Family Field on Wednesday, October 24.

“We haven’t really had any goal-scorers all season and we’ve needed goals as of late,” assistant coach Brendon Barrios said. “We have been running out of ideas and Grayam was injured the last couple weeks, but we knew that he was capable of scoring goals when healthy. When his movement is right, he puts the ball in the back of the net. Hopefully, he can give us a charge as we run down the last bit of the regular season.”

Noel Gorodetsky '19 and Shawn Farhadian '19 added one goal apiece for the Panthers, who outscored the Cavaliers 3-0 in the second half. The four goals tied a single-game season-high for Masters, which had tallied just two goals in its previous four matches.

The Panthers will close out the regular season against defending Fairchester Athletic Association (FAA) champ Hopkins School on Monday, October 29 at Greene Family Field at 4:00 PM. Masters lost an overtime heartbreaker to Hopkins in last year’s FAA final.

The Panthers, who have advanced to the FAA championship game three of the last four years and captured a pair of titles, will look to continue the trend in 2018. The FAA postseason gets underway with the quarterfinal round on Tuesday, November 6. Masters is 2-2-1 in league play this season, with both losses coming by a single goal.

“We can matchup against anybody,” said Barrios, who pegged Greens Farms Academy as a potential quarterfinal opponent. “Once you get to a final, it’s anybody’s game. You just don’t know. It’s about whether you can get there and make a last push.”
