West Point Trip Offers New Insight Into Hudson River History

Less than an hour up the river from The Masters School sits the historic United States Military Academy at West Point. And on Thursday, December 13, the sixth grade spent a snowy day visiting West Point as part of their study of the Hudson River.

The trip included a tour focusing on West Point’s pivotal role in the Revolutionary War. Part of the tour included students playing roles of important figures such as George Washington, Molly Corbin, Benedict Arnold and others. Meant to both inform and facilitate discussion, the tour also explained the broader role of West Point in the history of the United States, as well as how it selects cadets and what the cadet experience is like.

The sixth grade Hudson River curriculum, based in experiential learning, includes seining in the Hudson River, overlooking the river at West Point, and canoeing on the river at Constitution Marsh, a 270-acre fresh-water and brackish tidal marsh located between Constitution Island and the eastern shores of the Hudson River in Garrison, New York.
