February is Literary Month in the Middle School
February may be the shortest month, but it is packed full of great literary events.
Friday, February 1
The fifth and sixth grades will celebrate World Read Aloud Day, during which they will discover and discuss texts that have served as "powers for good in the world."
Monday, February 11
Critically acclaimed author Steve Sheinkin will visit the Middle School. Sheinkin is the author of several nonfiction history books that have received multiple accolades from industry leaders. His work Bomb: The Race to Build — and Steal — the World’s Most Dangerous Weapon, was a National Book Award Finalist, a 2013 Newbery Honor book and a Best Kids Books of the Year title. His latest work, Undefeated: Jim Thrope and the Carlisle Indian School Football Team was cited as the Best Book of 2017 from The Washington Post and was a New York City Public Library Notable Best Book for Teens.
Tuesday, February 26 - Thursday, February 28
We will host our second annual Middle School Book Fair. We are partnering once again with Main Street Books, an independently owned book distributor. The fair will be open before and after school and we will have evening shopping hours. Our students were very excited last year and the interest level was sky high!
Wednesday, February 27, at 7:00 PM in Doc Wilson Hall
Author, literary agent and Masters School parent Tanya McKinnon will present to parents on “Writing About Difficult History.” Under the pen name T.R. Simon, Tanya’s first book, Zora and Me, co-authored with Victoria Bond, won the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award for New Talent and was nominated for an Edgar Award in the category of best juvenile fiction. Her most recent book, Zora and Me: The Cursed Ground, was published in September 2018 and has received starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews, The Horn Book and School Library Journal, as well as a nomination for an Edgar Award in the category of best juvenile mystery.
