Varsity Swimming Teams Celebrate Seniors

The varsity girls’ and boys’ swimming teams both celebrated their seniors in a meet against visiting Hamden Hall on Saturday, February 9 at the Hamill Natatorium.

The girls secured an 85-72 victory, while the boys narrowly fell, 87-79, in a meet that came down to the final relay.

"The 16 seniors are a very special bunch," coach Sue Greally said. "Not only are they an exceptionally talented group who have collectively broken a number of team records, but they are incredible teammates. They are consistently willing to go above and beyond to support and help their teammates in any way they can.”

Greally went on to praise the leadership of senior captains Alex Bentzien, Michael D'Angelo and Marcus Diaz, along with the other seniors.

"It has been an honor and a privilege for the coaches to watch each of them grow as both swimmers and young men and women over the past four years," Greally said.

Six of the seniors — Bentzien, D'Angelo, Diaz, Ben Phil Stein, Max Steinert and Elenor Thomas-O'Brien — have been members of the team since freshman year, which coincided with the opening of the Fonseca Center.

Against Hamden Hall, Sophie Ruehlmann ’20 was the top standout for the girls, breaking her own team record in the 100 butterfly (1:09.68) and her own pool record in the 100 freestyle (59.61).

Diaz paced the boys, breaking his own team record in the 50 freestyle (23.82) and the team's record in the 100 freestyle (52.54).
