Varsity Winter Athletes Excel in Postseason

The varsity winter sports season came to a close over the last few weeks and there were a number of standout postseason performances by our talented fencing, indoor track and swimming athletes.

Indoor Track
 
The boys’ varsity indoor track team competed at the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) championships on February 21 at The Armory in New York City.
 
There were a number of standout performances, highlighted by the 4x200 meter relay team — consisting of Vittorio Stropoli, Luke Ferrando, Dorian Gilmartin and Judah Francella — finishing in second place with a time of 1:35.86. It doubled as a new school record.
 
Other top finishers included Gilmartin in the 55 meters (6.84, 5th place) and 300 meters (37.23, 5th place, personal record) and Ferrando in the 600 meters (1:28.49, 4th place, personal record).
 
Logan Schiciano (3,200 meters, 14th place, 11:18.90) and Daniel Jin (55 meters, 22nd place, 7.27) also set personal records in their respective events.
 
As a team, the boys finished in 9th place overall.

Fencing
 
Both the boys' and girls' varsity fencing teams battled at the Independent School Fencing League championships on February 23 at Hackley School.
 
The girls took first in sabre and third in foil, while the boys placed third in épée.

Swimming
 
The girls' and boys' varsity swimming teams wrapped up the season at the NYSAIS championships at Horace Mann on February 27.
 
The boys placed 7th overall as a team, while the girls took 10th. Ella Furniss was the team's top finisher, taking bronze in the 200-yard IM with a team record time of 2:22.02. Marcus Diaz led the boys with a pair of 5th place finishes in the 50-yard (23.56) and 100-yard freestyle (51.04) events. Both stood as new team records.
 
There were also six additional team records broken during the two-day event:

Both teams also swam at the Fairchester Athletic Association championships on February 23 at the Hopkins School. Diaz was the top finisher with a silver medal in the 100-yard freestyle. Grizzaffi paced the girls with a pair of team records in the 200-yard freestyle (2:15.49) and 100-yard backstroke (1:07.86).
