GREEN Week has an EFFECT on Campus

It’s as predictable as the seasons: when the weather gets warm, the quad fills up with students who are eager to enjoy the sun.

But this past Wednesday, April 24, the gathering was less recreational and rather purposeful. Approximately 30 students came together on the grassy parcel to compost the School’s food waste.

The activity was led by EFFECT, the Upper School’s student-led sustainability group, as part of the first ever GREEN Week, an entire week of events focusing on environmental sustainability. There was a different educational activity each day, including composting on the quad, a farmer’s market, tending to the School’s garden at the first ever Pack the GarDEN event, and a tree planting.

Emma Luis ’19, President of EFFECT, said that the idea for GREEN Week came about serendipitously: EFFECT was looking for a date for the annual farmer’s market, and Luis noticed that “Monday is Earth Day, and Friday is my favorite holiday — Arbor Day — so we thought, ‘why don’t we just just hold events every day?’” And that’s exactly what EFFECT did.

“Our main goal for this week was to make sustainability as accessible as possible to the community and involve as many people as possible,” Luis explained. And that’s because “every single person in this school has an effect on the world.”
