Varsity Girls and Boys Soccer Teams Open Season

The varsity girls and boys soccer teams each played a pair of matches this past week, embarking on what figures to be a promising fall 2019 campaign.

The girls were wildly impressive in their two matches, defeating Trevor Day School and Loyola School behind a combined six goals from striker Camille Smith ’22. Smith was a difference-maker with her speed and deft finishing ability.

"Camille was really special in her debut for Masters and the exciting part is that I don’t think we have even come close to tapping her potential," first-year coach Brendon Barrios said. "She has the ability to change games with her speed, strength and finishing. You would have never guessed she was new to the team! We are grateful that she decided to come to Masters and she will be a key player in turning around the culture of this program."

Ava Lederman ’22 also tallied five goals during the two-match period, while Lauren Marlowe ’23, Stella Simonds ’23, Stephanie Sanchez ’22 and Rowan McWhinnie ’22 added one goal apiece.

The girls will host Léman Manhattan Preparatory School in their next game on Friday, September 13 at 4:30 p.m. at Reunion Field.

"If we remain healthy, I know the girls want to be as competitive as possible," Barrios said of the team's expectations moving forward. "Ideally, it would be a berth in New York State Association of Independent Schools tournament. However, in the immediate, we just want to compete game in and game out, see girls grow in their development, have fun and, hopefully, win more games than last year."

The boys squad, meanwhile, opened up with a 1-1 (OT) draw against Collegiate School. Daniel Medina ’21 notched Masters' lone goal. The Panthers followed it up with a hard-fought 2-1 loss against Trevor Day School on Thursday, September 12 at Randall's Island. Mariano Russo ’21 tallied the goal. The Panthers will face visiting Rye Country Day School in their next match on Saturday, September 14 at 3:00 p.m. at Greene Family Field.
