Soccer Teams Bring Awareness to National Coming Out Day

The Masters School's Athletic Department recently teamed up with an animated children's series that focuses on social issues and inclusivity to bring awareness to National Coming Out Day on Friday, October 11.

Alumnus Chris Danzig ’99, a producer on the youth soccer-centric show called “LaGolda,” helped bring Masters into the fold after connecting with Athletic Director Logan Condon and Director of Equity and Inclusion Karen Brown.

"National Coming Out Day is a day of awareness established in the late 1980s," Brown said. "We have to understand that there are still many people who identify as LGBTQ+ but still feel uncomfortable for various reasons about coming out to loved ones, colleagues and friends. It is a day to remind us that we all have a journey in life and we should all be proud of who we are and where our personal journeys will take us."

As part of the initiative, the varsity girls, varsity boys and middle school soccer teams all used specially branded soccer balls — which featured rainbows — this past week in various games and practices. Over 200 additional soccer teams around the globe also participated in the initiative, according to the show's Facebook page.
