Action-Packed Week for Varsity Athletics

It was a busy week for our varsity athletics teams as the regular season started to wind down. 

Girls volleyball, field hockey, boys soccer, girls soccer and girls tennis all competed with their might.

Field hockey secured a huge 2-1 victory over Horace Mann on Monday, October 21. Senior captain Muriel McWhinnie ’20 notched a pair of goals to pace the offense, while Vasilisa Ioukhnovets ’21 added an assist. Goalie Nicole Newman ’20 spearheaded the defensive effort with nine saves, including three inside the final minute of regulation. 

Boys soccer battled host Harvey School to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday, October 23. Eric Dowd ’20 and Reed Gilmore ’21 tallied one goal apiece to power the Panthers. 

Girls volleyball dropped a pair of hard-fought four-set matches to Trinity School (11-25, 12-25, 25-12, 12-25) on Monday, October 21 and Riverdale Country School (9-25, 25-18, 19-25, 20-25) on Wednesday, October 23. Against Trinity, Natalie Lockhart ’20 showed her versatility by playing a number of different positions. Ashleigh Woodruff ’23, Gwenn Sabato ’20 and Sophia Herzberg ’20 also contributed. Sabato led the team in kills against Riverdale, while Lockhart, Olivia Madkins ’23 and Haley Schickman ’20 also turned in strong performances.

Girls soccer extended their unbeaten streak to six games with a 5-1 win over Avenues on Monday, October 21 and a 2-2 tie against Greenwich Country Day on Tuesday, October 22. Against Avenues, Camille Smith ’22 led the way with hat-trick. Ava Lederman ’22 and Stephanie Sanchez ’22 added one goal each. Smith and Lauren Marlowe ’23 recorded one goal apiece against Greenwich. 

Girls tennis swept Kennedy Catholic, 4-0, on Monday, October 21. The doubles teams of Kira Ratan ’22/Carol Queiroz ’23, Eliza Abady ’21/Sophie Grand ’22, Anastasiia Gorobets ’21/Lili Elkind ’21 and Sofia Benson ’20/Maelani Groff ’20 all emerged victorious.
