Eighth Graders Use Science to Create Paintings

Paint-dipped cotton balls flew across the quad and landed on canvases, creating colorful images that were reminiscent of famed abstract expressionist Jackson Pollack’s work.

The activity, held on Friday, October 25, was part of the eighth grade science curriculum, and it aimed to teach students about projectile motion while providing them with an opportunity to create art, said middle school science teacher Morgan Lewis.

“The students were charged with engineering their own catapults,” Lewis explained. “The challenge was to manipulate particular variables such as the launch angle and the weight of the projectile to create the ‘perfect artistic canvas.’”

The resulting paintings are currently hanging in Lewis’ classroom in Morris Hall and will be on display during the Eighth Grade Arts Expo in the spring.
