Leadership Group Scores a Goal With Fundraiser

A drop in temperature didn’t cool the excitement during last Friday’s middle school soccer tournament fundraiser.

The event, planned by the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Leadership Group, took place on Friday, November 8, and raised $260 for Black Girls Code, an organization that provides young and pre-teen girls of color with opportunities to learn in-demand skills in technology and computer programming.

With 12 teams of five or six players, nearly half of the Middle School participated in the tournament; those not playing cheered from the sidelines and enjoyed a bake sale and complimentary hot chocolate to keep them warm. Nathan Lothian ’24 and Arjun Ratan ’24, two of DEI’s leaders, were pleased that they were able to raise money and awareness for a worthy cause. “We chose Black Girls Code because a lot of women are especially underrepresented in tech, but it also has to do with people of color, who are underrepresented in the whole spectrum of employment,” said Ratan. “It’s a lot of fun to do things for causes that really represent what our club stands for.”

Although only one team walked away victorious from the competition, the event was a win for everyone involved.
