Students Showcase Medley of Music Genres at Winter Concert

The annual Middle School Winter Concert drew a crowd that filled the Claudia Boettcher Theatre on Friday, December 20, 2019, with hundreds of community members gathering for a set of joyful and enjoyable musical performances by the Middle School Jazz Band, Orchestra, MastersSingers and a variety of soloists.

Each grade also took the stage to serenade the crowd with a song relevant to its curriculum; the fifth grade, for example, is in the midst of a yearlong study of opera, and performed a rendition of “Evening Prayer” from the opera “Hansel and Gretel.” The audience was also treated to the sixth grade performance of “Old Joe Clark,” an American folk song, and “One Love” by Bob Marley, sung by the seventh grade. The eighth grade took on “I Won’t Back Down” by Tom Petty.

Katie Meadows, coordinator of middle school performing arts, said the concert is particularly meaningful because it is the only time that the entire Middle School comes together to perform.  “We are so proud of the courage, commitment and meaningful connection that our students demonstrated. It was inspiring to see the students lifting one another up throughout the concert,” Meadows reflected.

The concert concluded with a beloved tradition: middle school alumni returned to the stage to perform the round “Now I Walk in Beauty” with current students. The voices of fifth graders weaved together with those of college-aged alumni, creating a powerful and moving finale.
