Accolades for Debate Team During Regis Tournament

The Masters School Debate Team emerged from the Regis Christmas Classic tournament with bragging rights: Partners Kai Cowin ’21 and Carolyn Hohl ’21 won third overall in the varsity public forum, and Cowin was awarded best speaker in the varsity public forum.

The tournament took place on Saturday, December 21, 2019, at Regis High School in New York City.

Individually, Cowin and Hohl have impressive debate credentials. Cowin is nationally ranked and has attended Harvard Debate Camp. Hohl, who has been part of Debate Team for just a year and a half, is the team’s co-captain. Despite their notable backgrounds,
each credits the other and the larger team for their win. “We wouldn’t have done so well if we didn’t have a good partnership,” Cowin said. Hohl agreed and noted: “It’s great that we have a team that is so close. They believed in us.”

Upper school English teacher Zev Barnett, who is a debate team coach and advisor alongside fellow upper school English teacher Miriam Emery, shared that he is proud of the team and its accomplishments. He acknowledged that winning awards is “a nice bonus.” But more than medals, Barnett is proud of the welcoming and supportive environment the team cultivates — the same environment that Cowin and Hohl described as essential to their win.
