Varsity Fencers Excel at ISFL Individual Championships

The Masters School's varsity girls fencing team took first place in all three weapons at the Independent School Fencing League Individual Championships at Horace Mann School.

Sunny Shi ’22 (foil), Gaby Chernomorsky ’21 (épée) and Audrey Lockett ’20 (saber) powered the Panthers during the event on Saturday, January 25, and impressed coach Francisco Martin in the process.

"Our three champions showed excellent skills," Martin said. "In foil and saber, Sunny and Audrey scored most of their touches with great speed and coordination, attacking their opponents while also making it difficult to defend. In épée, Gaby went on the offensive early in the bout until she grabbed a lead. She then changed to a more defensive style, making her opponent go on the attack. This allowed her to control the distance and counterattack her opponent’s arm."

Martin added the team-wide support was tremendous.

"The rest of the team was cheering and celebrating every single touch that they scored," the legendary coach said.
