Varsity Athletics Teams Wrap up Postseason

Our girls basketball, swimming, indoor track, fencing and squash teams all closed out their respective postseason campaigns over the past 10 days.

Panthers Excel at NYSAIS Swimming Championships 
 
Both the varsity boys and girls swimming teams competed at the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) swimming championships at Horace Mann earlier this week. In an event that featured 20 teams, the boys finished seventh while the girls placed 11th. 
 
There were also a number of individual accomplishments on the girls side, as three team records were broken by Jaden Bascon ’23 (500-yard freestyle, 5:33.94), Carly Grizzaffi ’21 (100-yard backstroke, 1:07.60) and Ella Furniss ’20 (100-yard breaststroke, 1:19.74). Additionally, all of the boys and girls relays teams placed in the Top 10.

Girls Basketball Plays in Third Straight NYSAIS Final
 
No. 2-seeded Masters defeated No. 3-seeded Columbia Prep, 60-52, in the NYSAIS semifinal round on Saturday, February 22 at the Fonseca Center. 
 
Gwenn Sabato ’20 led the way with a game-high 26 points. Noemia Massingue ’20 (11 points, 10 rebounds, five steals) and Brooke Tatarian ’21 (eight points, 12 rebounds) also contributed for the Panthers.
 
Masters then fell to top-seeded Horace Mann, 55-33, in the final on Monday, February 24 at Fieldston School. It marked the Panthers' third consecutive appearance in the NYSAIS championship game. 

 
Wolfson Sets New Team Record at NYSAIS Indoor Track and Field Championships
 
Both the girls and boys indoor track and field teams excelled at the NYSAIS championships on Thursday, February 20 at The Armory Track & Field Center. 
 
Sabrina Wolfson ’22 paced the girls with a new school record time of 7.77 in the 55-meter dash. For the boys, Judah Francella ’20 set a new personal record in the 300 meters with a time of 36.74 to place fourth. He also took third in the 55-meter hurdles. Dorian Gilmartin ’20 placed third in the 55-meter dash, while Aidan Lothian ’22 set a new personal record in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:51.90 for an eighth-place finish. In the 4x200 relay, the boys finished third and the girls placed seventh.

Boys Squash Falls in Quarterfinals of National Championships
 
The boys squash team competed at the HEAD U.S. High School Team Squash Championships (Division V) from February 21-23 at The Loomis Chaffee School. 
 
Masters edged New Canaan, 4-3, in the opening round but lost a hard-fought 4-3 match against eventual runner-up Mercersburg Academy in the quarterfinal round. 
 
The Panthers battled back to defeat Moses Brown School, 5-2, in the Classic Plate semifinal before falling to St. Mark's School, 5-2, in the Classic Plate final.

Fencing Teams Travel to Hackley for ISFL Team Championships  
 
Both the girls and boys fencing teams competed at the Independent School Fencing League (ISFL) championship this past weekend at Hackley. 
 
In the team championships, the girls took first in foil and third in épée and sabre. The Panthers also placed first in all three weapons in the final league standings. 
 
The boys, meanwhile, took second in épée and third in foil in the team championships. They were second in épée in the final league standings.
