Guitarist Receives Scholarship for Music School
Julia Levin ’21 first started playing guitar when she was young — just 8 or 9 years old — and since then has become a passionate musician who has even given a TEDxTheMastersSchool Talk on the subject of female guitarists in the music industry.
And now, Levin, who also studies at Lagond Music School in Elmsford, New York, has the opportunity to further her musical studies at Lagond as the recipient of The Shari McNulty Music Scholarship Award.
The guitarist first began at Lagond in summer 2019, and during the school year, Levin spends every Sunday there. “I love going, it’s fun. The day goes by so fast,” the talented musician said. And so, when she was nominated to apply for The Shari McNulty Music Scholarship Award at Lagond, she jumped at the opportunity.
Although the scholarship could have been split up among several students, Levin received the entirety of the scholarship by unanimous vote. “It was amazing,” Levin said about finding out she had was the sole recipient. Shari Applebaum, a member of the Lagond board of directors, said that McNulty “was thrilled to read Julia’s essay and her responses as to why she deserved the award.” She added that McNulty considered the applicant “the perfect fit.”
Shari McNulty, a generous patron of the arts, created the scholarship “out of the goodness of her heart, a love for music, and to provide a student with a scholarship to persevere with their passion in music,” Applebaum explained. The scholarship will help Levin continue to build her musical acumen, while also helping her reach her goal of attending a music school for college.
