Get to Know Next Year’s Executive Committee Co-Chairs

Congratulations to Caio Lanes ’21 and Sophia Viscarello ’21, who were voted in as the 2020-2021 Executive Committee co-chairs.

Lanes and Viscarello took the time to answer the following five questions about themselves and their goals for next year:

From Caio Lanes ’21:
1. What inspired you to run for co-chair?
That was a decision that I made after advice from friends who thought I could serve the position well. I decided to give it a shot, and here I am now. Also, we had amazing co-chairs this year, and they are definitely role models, not just for me, but for the rest of the community.

2. What are some of your priorities next year as co-chair?
For Executive Committee, I will prioritize expanding transparency to make sure that our proposals presented there are viewed as essential and beneficial for the community. Aside from Executive Committee, my main focus is going to be to make sure that everyone in the community can have engaging moments and fun in Morning Meeting.

3. What are some of your interests at Masters?
I’m the president of three different clubs: Latinos Unidos, Chess Club and Cosmos Club. I’m also an active member of Model United Nations and Next Generation Politics.

4. What is your favorite part about being a member of the Masters community?
I would say that it’s the fact that I can strive to be the best version of myself, knowing that I have the support of my friends, teachers, staff and administration. They’re all confident and their support helps me to achieve my goals.

5. What is a fun fact about yourself that you’d like to share with the community?
When I was 11, I wrote a book on Norse mythology just for the fun of it. I ended up publishing the book. I also have a dog, a dalmatian. His name is Pax, he’s around 9 years old, and he’s my best friend.

From Sophia Viscarello ’21:
1. What inspired you to run for co-chair?
To put it simply, I decided to run for co-chair because I love this community and all it has given to me. Masters has provided me with a safe space to develop who I am without fear of judgment, and I feel that’s the greatest gift I could give to any Masters student, current or future: to continue to foster a community where they feel safe to figure out who they are and to unapologetically be that person.

2. What are some of your priorities next year as co-chair?
My main priority for next year is to hear the opinions and ideas of our whole community, and then take action to make real change. We are a community of over 500 very different students, all with their own unique and wonderful ideas. I want to tap into that to help make Masters the best it can be.

3. What are some of your interests at Masters?
I’ve had the opportunity to participate in many different activities during my time so far at Masters. I’m a varsity fencer, a Gold Key member, a peer leader, and a photographer both in classes and for Tower. This year, I was also able to get involved in the planning and running of the Midnight Runs and singing in one of our a capella groups, Dohters.

4. What is your favorite part about being a member of the Masters community?
My favorite part of being a member of this community is the people I get to be surrounded by every day. The students, teachers, administrators, staff — everyone on campus is so kind and supportive, and I really owe the fact that I had the courage to run for co-chair to this incredible community.

5. What is a fun fact about yourself that you’d like to share with the community?
I have the titles, artists and lyrics of more than 2,000 songs memorized! Some of my family and friends say it’s my mini superpower.
