Family Band Gives the Gift of Music to Hospital Workers

Health care staff at Montefiore Nyack Hospital in Nyack, New York, have been regularly treated to the music of the Malino Family Band, a Masters family trio made up of John Malino Scheuer P’18, ’20, Buster Scheuer ’20 and Sarah Scheuer ’18.

The father and children, who have been performing together for the last seven years, have been taking part in a local project where musicians play for the hospital’s staff and first responders at either 7:00 a.m. or 7:00 p.m., which are the hospital’s shift change times. “It’s a way of sending a little love and support to our local heroes,” Robin Scheuer P’18, ’20 said, noting that the performances have been well-received by staff, who often will stand outside and listen to the music or give a wave as they head home from a long day of caring for the sick. The band performs a few originals and a wide array of covers, ranging from folk and country to spirituals, jazz and rock. “One of the silver linings of being home together is that the family band can rehearse,” Robin Scheuer shared.

In addition to their hospital concerts, the band recently hosted a Facebook Live concert for Feeding America, a U.S. hunger-relief organization, a recording of which can be found on the band’s Facebook page.

While the family band continues to spread good cheer, the musically inclined Buster Scheuer used this time of social distancing to complete his own project: recording and releasing a new EP by his band Cheap 52.
