Halloween at Masters Lifts Spirits

Despite the tricky weather, students in the Middle School and Upper School were treated to fun treats all week.

Costumed faculty members, a playful parade and some rocking music videos made for a devilishly good time. It must be Halloween at Masters!

The Upper School students kicked off their holiday on Friday, October 30 by streaming creative YouTube videos in lieu of the traditional videos, skits and musical performances that previously took place in the Claudia Boettcher Theatre. Joseph Diaz ’21 said, “Having the videos throughout the day makes it feel like an all-day event which is pretty cool.”

Bands performed Halloween-inspired music from the Cranberries to Warren Zevon which were enjoyed by all. Dressed as a plague doctor Teddy Masters ’21 added, “I just think it’s really fun that we have all these traditions and videos and that it’s more than just a half-baked thing.”

Cynthia Cohen ’21, who wore a witch costume, captured it best. “Everybody celebrates it and you see all the grades representing what they’re supposed to be and it’s just fun seeing people wearing stuff they don't usually wear. It's just really nice.”

Head of Upper School Peter Newcomb agreed, “Halloween has always been an exciting tradition at Masters, and the seniors did a great job of creatively adjusting the structure of the day to try and capture its spirit.  The videos are always a highlight of the day!”

Middle School Students March in Halloween Parade

The chill in the air set the mood for a spooky, spine-tingling middle school Halloween parade held on Wednesday, October 28. “The wet weather did not dampen the creative spirit and sense of humor of many of our students and teachers who came out as swamp creatures, dragons, robots, and I even spotted a deviled egg!” said Head of Middle School Tasha Elsbach, who was dressed in a gingerbread cookie costume.

This year's pandemic-adjusted festivities included an outdoor parade followed by music, photos and sweet treats. Vampire Kelsey Philibert ’27 enjoyed the fanfare. “I think it’s pretty fun because everybody gets candy, and we walk around in crazy outfits.” Classmate Emily Tarter ’27 agreed, “I think it’s even more fun than last year because we get to do it outside on the pretty campus,” she said.

Along the route from the main driveway to Clinton Avenue, students waved to Head of School Laura Danforth and arrived at a decked-out Estherwood Mansion where they were greeted by middle school faculty members Lynn Salehi, Katie Meadows, Vicente Saavedra and Bruce Robbins, aka the Monster of Ceremonies. “The character is like a Liberace vampire: flashy, funny and a little scary,” said Robbins. Goody bags packed by Eileen Lynch and Erica Ligielski added to the merriment.

A festive virtual event for remote students was also held by middle school math teacher Pamela Borowiec and middle school eighth grade dean and middle school science teacher Morghan Lewis. “It was really nice for everyone to connect with each other,” Borowiec said.

The School’s traditions continue thanks to the connection and camaraderie. “Halloween is a special celebration in middle school, and our community rallied to make this one extra special for the students,” added Meadows, who served as the resident DJ.
