Impactful Image Earns Prestigious Nod
Sharing her message through art has paid off for photography student Haoqing (Sunny) Shi ’22. A towering construction site near her home inspired Shi to snap a prizewinning image emblazoned with the word “Awaken.”
The photo was one of 30 to be selected by the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles and the nonprofit design lab, Amplifier. The theme of the competition aimed at young artists was “In Pursuit of…”
Teens were encouraged to express themselves through the lens of social justice advocacy. Winning photographs will be included in a special Getty exhibition and be a part of a public projection series in various cities nationwide.
Shi accompanied her photo with this written submission: “When you are going out to seek your own goals, do you forget something highly valued by others? Which is more important, a city's development or an enjoyable environment? Awakening can be the prosperity of a city or an outbreak of environmental pollution. But more importantly, awakening is our awareness of what is happening around us and what people have done.”
“I tended to think that photography was simply a way of documenting my life. But recently, especially after finishing some projects this year, I think more deeply when taking photos about what story I want to convey,” Shi said.
Shi’s keen eye has also impressed upper school visual arts teacher Rachel Langosch.
“I have been absolutely amazed by the images Sunny has presented in class this semester and I can see how her passion for photography has been a leading motivation for her process,” Langosch said.
