Alum Selected 12th Overall in National Women's Soccer League Draft

Sam Coffey ’17 wrote another chapter in her storied soccer career on Wednesday, January 13, getting selected 12th overall by Portland Thorns F.C. in the 2021 National Women's Soccer League Draft.

Coffey, who scored 100 goals as a member of Masters' varsity girls soccer squad, began her college career at Boston College before transferring to Penn State in 2019. At Boston College, she was named Atlantic Coast Conference Midfielder of the Year for the 2018 season. In 2019, she led the Nittany Lions to a Big Ten championship while tallying 11 goals and 10 assists. She was named to the All-Big Ten First team and honored as a United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American.

Coffey also has plenty of international experience, competing with the U.S. Women’s National Team at the U-18, U-19 and U-20 levels. She served as captain for U-19 and U-20 teams.

Beyond soccer, Coffey has truly proven to embody Masters' mission of being a power for good in the world. As COVID-19 came bearing down on New York City last year, she organized a GoFundMe for Midnight Run to help the city's homeless population. It raised a total of $2,290 to help provide masks, gloves, sanitizer, food and other resources.
