Logan Schiciano Named Top Student Journalist in New York

Logan Schiciano ’21 was recently awarded The New York State Student Journalist of the Year by the Journalism Education Association (JEA).

This contest was open to high school seniors in all public and private schools in New York State.

"It was more than Logan's superior work that rose him to the top of the pack," said Katina Paron, New York State JEA Director and contest administrator. "His advanced ability to reflect and learn from every situation showed the judges that he was the best representative of New York State scholastic journalism this year. We have no doubt the great things he will do in the future. I'm looking forward to seeing his byline everywhere."

Schiciano, the founder and producer of Tower Broadcast News, and last year's Tower editor-in-chief, said, "I'm thrilled to see all the hard work I've put in the last three years manifest itself in such an incredible award. "

He will now go up against the winners from 31 other states for National Journalist of the Year, awarded at the annual spring journalism convention.

This is the second time a Masters student has been awarded this prestigious title. In 2013, Tyler Pager, now a White House correspondent at the Washington Post, won this award.

Earlier this year, Schiciano was awarded the Multimedia Journalist of the Year at the Fall National Scholastic Press Association conference. He plans on attending the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.

“Logan really, truly loves reporting the news and I think he's absolutely happiest when he's working on a story, which is pretty much all the time,” said Ellen Cowhey, Tower’s faculty co-advisor. “Some seniors slow down after they've gotten into college, but not him.”

Upper School History/Religion and Journalism Teacher Ellen Cowhey contributed to this report.
