Chamber Trio Performs App-ealing Music

Chamber music students — Andrew Chang ’22 on violin, Ryan Guan ’23 on contrabass, and Sarah Wu ’22 on flute — were featured in the recent product upgrade launch for the Upbeat music app.

“Upbeat has helped by giving us a platform for students to rehearse and perform via coordinated audio and video recording,” explained Curt Ebersole, upper school performing arts teacher. “The app creates ‘Brady Bunch’- style videos of up to 140 players without complex video editing.”

Ebersole has been using Upbeat in his classical music ensemble classes since September and submitted a performance video of the trio's Haydn’s London Trio No. 1 to the developers as an outstanding example of what the application can do, especially for students who attend Masters remotely from Beijing, Taiwan and Shanghai.

The developers were very impressed with the coordination and quality of the performance, and invited Ebersole to share the video and talk about using Upbeat in his Masters classroom during the launch presentation.

“I would like to thank Mr. Ebersole for giving our group a chance to present our project to Upbeat and its users all over the country,” said Guan.

Guan also applauded the power of technology during these challenging times.

“I think this app really solved the problem of distance due to remote learning,” he said. “It is nice that we are still able to play music ‘together’ in the midst of a pandemic.”
