An Onscreen “Odyssey” Debuts Tonight

In preparation for their final production of the season, Masters Mainstage students have spent much time and energy rehearsing for the spring play, an adaptation of Homer’s “The Odyssey,” which premieres tonight, Friday, May 21, at 7:00 p.m.

Audience members will be treated to a virtual version of the Greek saga of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, who took 10 years to return from the Trojan War, traveling to the ends of the earth, and even to hell and back, in his quest to return home.

Theater teacher and director Meg O’Connor loved creating different worlds for the production and promised “a lot of fun props — swords, glowing orbs, stilts, sheepskin rugs and so much fabric.” Students who are learning remotely also participated, with three students in China playing gods who will appear as video projections on a wall. “It works surprisingly well to have them larger than life, floating above the heads of the actors.”
