In Loving Memory of Panton Adams

In a fitting tribute, the Masters community planted a tree in memory of Panton Adams in front of the Middle School, where each morning he warmly greeted everyone by name.

Students and faculty came together to honor Adams, a man known on campus for his big smile and kind heart, during a memorial tree dedication on Wednesday, June 9. Adams, who died of complications related to COVID-19 on February 1, worked in the School's Security Department since 2013.

Head of School Laura Danforth described Adams as “a great man and a cherished friend and colleague.” She recalled his knack for remembering people’s names and their backstories, as well as his generous spirit.

During a time of reflection, Sophie Moussapour ’25 performed a moving rendition of “Amazing Grace” on violin while students, faculty and staff participated in the planting.

Director of Equity and Inclusion Karen Brown hailed Adams as a role model and a man of courage and integrity who “cared deeply for all in this community, especially the students.” Her hope is that the tree “will bring us the brightness that Panton bestowed on all of us every day.”

A virtual, community-wide celebration of Adams’ life was held in February with students, faculty, parents, staff, alumnae/i and his family. Additionally, a GoFundMe campaign was organized by a school parent and a faculty member to assist his wife and daughters with various costs and has raised close to $60,000.

This summer, a bench and plaque will be placed beside the beautiful Eastern redbud tree.
