Weekend Workshop Hits All The Right Notes

Broadway is back and so is Preludes, the Middle School’s musical theater troupe. .

Students celebrated their return to live performing with a time-honored tradition: a pajama workshop and potluck lunch party on Saturday, September 25, in Doc Wilson Hall

Clad in their finest sleep attire, 27 students joined co-directors and middle school performing arts teachers Jason Reiff and Katie Meadows for some physical and vocal warm-ups before diving into the lyrics and choreography for a challenging piece titled “On My Way” from the off-Broadway musical “Violet.”

Meadows was thrilled students and teachers were “reconnecting with one another and making art together in person” and proud of how the students “worked diligently to learn all the choreography for this number.”
“Our students are stepping cautiously and gleefully back into the light, leading the way and beckoning community audiences back to their seats,” Reiff said. “Nothing beats the power of live performances and we’ve been waiting patiently to step back onto the stage.”

From learning all the moves to picnicking with fellow performers, eighth grader Ari Melnick ’26 had a blast. “It was really fun to see people on the weekend and do this activity together – especially the dancing!”

As the troupe gears up for its annual revue-style performance in November, a surprise visit from Head of School Laura Danforth gave the students a chance to show off their hard work. “It was a joyous moment for me to watch the students sing and dance together,” Danforth said. “This is just the beginning of a wonderful year ahead for Preludes and our entire performing arts community.”
