Varsity Tennis Squad Honors Ratan

As the sole Class of 2022 member on the varsity girls tennis team, this year's senior match shone the spotlight directly on Kira Ratan.

A member of the squad since ninth grade, Ratan made the most of the opportunity, powering the Panthers to a hard-fought 4-3 victory over visiting Convent Sacred Heart (NYC) on Tuesday, October 19.

"It was surreal to be the senior after three years of looking up to past captains," Ratan said. "I feel very honored to be the captain and the sole senior on the team. It was so great to be able to come together for this match and celebrate together."

Ratan, Hanna Schiciano ’23, Alexis Estime ’23 and Hanna Frasca ’23 all won their singles matches, securing a team win after a slew of close matches this fall.

"We've been working hard on our skills and technique this season in order to prepare for competition," Ratan said. "It's been two years since our last official season, so I think we just needed to get back into the groove of things, and we did on Tuesday. Not to mention, our team spirit has been off the charts recently, which always helps."

Following the match, Ratan reflected on her experience with the team, noting how impactful it was to her Masters experience.

"When I was chosen to be on varsity freshman year, I was really scared," she said. "I was the only freshman, and I was playing No. 1 singles. But, every single person on the team was so kind and welcoming. The tennis team was really the first home I found here as an upper school student at Masters, and I remember laughing and cheering with teammates as a freshman, sophomore, junior, and now, senior. I feel so proud to be captain of this team and represent Masters as a tennis player. This is probably the greatest athletic high school experience I could have asked for. I'll be sad to leave all my teammates once I graduate."
