Middle School Diplomats Prep for Exciting Season

Fresh off their success at The Ursuline School Model UN Conference (TUSMUNC) last month, junior delegates from the Middle School's Model UN (MUN) team are hard at work preparing for their next conference.

Eleven delegates competed at TUSMUNC, 10 of whom were competing for the first time. Eighth grader Rohan Lavery took home Best Delegate (1st) as book series character Percy from the Percy Jackson Committee, seventh grader Kate Anderson received Honorable Delegate (3rd) honors as Jeff Bezos in the Amazon Board of Directors Committee, and seventh grader Valentina Valdivia won Outstanding Delegate (2nd) as Gale Hawthorne on the Hunger Games Joint Crisis Committee (District 13).

The junior diplomats have been learning about specialized committees and writing directives and resolutions with guidance from their upper school MUN student coaches.

MUN faculty advisor Brittany Farrar is proud of all her students. “It’s gratifying to see the younger delegates settling into the rules of procedure and into their coaches' high expectations for them,” she said. “It’s a big team, so it’s essential that they are focused and supportive of one another in meetings.”

Sixth grader Vivi Rolston is a newcomer who was looking for “a new kind of talking/debating with my friends” and heard good things from their brother in the Upper School and others about MUN. They appreciate that MUN “offers a chance to look into other countries' political standpoints that you might not have known about.”

Next up for this talented group is the virtual YMCA Middle School Model UN conference in mid-January.
