Varsity Fencing Teams Foil RCDS in Home Opener

The glorious sounds of steel-on-steel combat rang through the Francisco Martin Fencing Room on Tuesday, January 11.

Unsurprisingly, The Masters School's talented group of varsity girls and boys fencers didn't skip a beat.

The Panthers, who were hosting a home match for the first time in some two years due to the pandemic, impressed in a convincing victory over Rye Country Day School (RCDS).

"It's been a tough start to the season with COVID taking out some of our athletes and rescheduling meets, but having a competition in our fencing room for the first time in almost two years boosted the team's morale," said head coach Clara Meere-Weigel ’15.

Masters nearly completed a clean sweep, securing victories in all three weapons (épée, sabre and foil) on the girls side and in sabre and foil on the boys side. The boys narrowly lost by a single bout in épée. See below for detailed scores/stats from all three weapons.

"Though I would have loved to have wins across the board, I'm proud of my team," Meere-Weigel said.

Both the boys and girls also won their opening matches against Riverdale on December 10, 2021. The Panthers will look to keep the streak going in a rematch against Riverdale at home on Wednesday, January 19, at 4:30 p.m.
