Middle School Athletics Take Center Stage

Middle School athletics took center stage on Thursday, September 29, as the girls soccer, boys soccer, field hockey and volleyball teams all embarked on their respective fall 2022 campaigns.

Purple boys soccer (eighth grade), white boys soccer (seventh grade) and field hockey all debuted at home, while girls soccer and volleyball were both on the road.

"It was an amazing day in the middle school," said middle school math teacher Neil Jaggernauth, who also coaches the purple boys soccer team. "Throughout the day there was a buzz as the student-athletes were very excited to finally have their first games after preparing these first few weeks of the school year."

And the results were encouraging for the Panthers.

White boys soccer blanked visiting Rye Country Day School, 7-0, on West Field. Garrett Navin ’28 powered the offense with a hat-trick and Arthur Burkhardt anchored a strong defensive performance. Purple boys soccer lost a hard-fought 2-1 match against French-American School of New York on Reunion Field. Keeper Aaron Guerrero ’27 stood out for his strong play in net and Harvey Pena ’27 was a consistent box-to-box threat. Field hockey rounded out the home games with a spirited effort against Fieldston, showing promise despite suffering a 4-0 defeat on Greene Family Field.

Girls soccer bested host Windward, 5-0, as Frankie Navin ’28 matched her twin brother, Garrett, with a hat-trick. Caitlyn Berry recorded five saves in net to preserve the clean sheet. Volleyball capped off the busy opening day of action with a 3-0 victory over host Rye Country Day School.

"It was great to have so many wins and close scores," Jaggernauth said. "This morning, coming into the building, the students were excited to talk about how their games went and to cheer each other on during Morning Meeting as we announced the results and the top performers."
