Launched in 2012, Before 19 is an e-journal written and edited by seniors enrolled in a creative nonfiction class at The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York. Each issue’s original essays, written in a variety of stylistic approaches and voice, demonstrate the wealth of experience and reflection that can occur before the age of 19. Some of the narratives present a concept of self; others portray a place of significance to the writer; still others deal with social and cultural issues, personal relations, and family history. The students in this workshop write, critique one another’s work, and revise throughout the academic year. Finally, they act as editors, selecting essays and art for the journal. We hope you enjoy Before 19.
