Varsity Boys Volleyball Battles as Spring Season Heats Up

Masters’ varsity boys volleyball team left it all on the court in Tuesday’s home opener against Trevor Day School at the Fonseca Center.

The Panthers, showing impressive effort and resilience, dropped a heartbreaking 27–25 opening set and ultimately fell 3–0 (25–27, 17–25, 20–25).

“We had some very good blocking, and our back row defense was moving and passing well,” coach Diane Scott said. “We missed too many serves at crucial points of the sets — especially in set one. We must be able to serve consistently under pressure.”

Artur Carbonieri Salgado ’27 was a standout for Masters, recording six aces, five kills and two digs. Thomas Duke ’27 (six blocks, two kills) and Nico Khoury-Levy ’27 (four kills, two aces, two assists) rounded out the production.

The Panthers also showed grit in their season-opening 3–2 loss at United Nations International School (UNIS) in March. Once again, Salgado delivered a stellar performance, leading the team in points while tallying seven aces.

“Co-captain Artur Salgado, who is actually a setter, is doing a great job learning to play as an outside hitter,” Scott said. “Thomas Duke is very successful as a middle blocker and hitter.”

Masters will hit the road for its next match at Grace Church School on Friday, April 10, at 4:30 p.m.

“The goal is to serve well and communicate more,” Scott said. “The expectation is to win games moving forward.”

The spring athletics season heats up this week across campus, with several teams hosting their home openers.

On April 8, varsity baseball will face KIPP NYC College Prep at 4:30 p.m. at Clarke Field, while varsity girls lacrosse hosts Horace Mann at 4:30 p.m. at Greene Field. Varsity boys tennis is set to face visiting St. Luke’s on April 10 at 4:00 p.m. Rounding it out, the track and field teams will compete in the Masters Relays at Greene Field on Saturday, April 11, at 10:30 a.m.
