History Bowl Team Earns Honors at National Championship
Masters' History Bee and Bowl team participated in the National History Bee and Bowl (NHBB) National Championships over the April 27-28 weekend. The squad advanced to the playoffs for the second straight year, and finished 27th in the country among 252 teams.
The NHBB is a series of nationwide history quiz competitions for high school, middle school and elementary students in the United States. To reach the national championships, students must first compete at regional qualifying tournaments. At qualifying tournaments for high school students, participants also have the opportunity to compete in the National History Bee, an individual competition.
Some 1,200 students qualified to compete in the 2018 national championships, according to John Chiodo, Masters' team coach and Director of Innovation, Engineering and Computer Science. The events were held in Washington, DC and Arlington, VA.
The National History Bowl — a team event — featured 252 teams that played preliminary rounds throughout the day on April 28, Mr. Chiodo says. Masters' team was one of only 32 squads that advanced to the playoffs, he adds.
The team included sophomore Emanuel Adamiak and juniors Katie Accetta, Elijah Emery, Shawn Farhadian and David Oks.
On April 27, freshman Tim Mathas joined 245 students in the national championships of the junior varsity United States History Bee, a competition focusing solely on American history. David Oks and Elijah Emery competed in the varsity division, with David earning a spot in the semifinals.
Later that afternoon, freshman Mitch Fink competed against 180 students in the national championships of the United States Geography Olympiad. In the evening, Shawn Farhadian competed in the national championships of the National Sports and Entertainment History Bee.
