Assembly Highlights School’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Work

The year’s first Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Assembly took place on Tuesday, October 15, and included a presentation by diversity ambassadors and a panel discussion with faculty, staff and administrators.

Director of Equity and Inclusion Karen Brown began the meeting by sharing the focus of her work and the importance of shining a light on issues of social justice. She reminded the crowd that “as individuals, we all have a personal narrative, a personal story,” that “defines a lot of who we are.”

The assembly featured videos on preferred pronouns and on student-led clubs and initiatives around diversity, equity and inclusion. It also included a panel of faculty, staff and administrators. Chair of the Modern and Classical Languages Department Richard Simon, Interim Dean of Students and Dean of the Class of 2020 Jeff Carnevale, Associate Director of College Counseling Esperanza Borrero-Large and security officer Panton Adams shared personal anecdotes and experiences on privilege.

The assembly is the first of several that will take place over the course of the year and will highlight the community’s work around these issues. “Equity and Inclusion is a very important part of the fabric here at Masters,” Brown said. “Because the landscape of diversity, equity and inclusion and social justice work is forever changing, we will forever be learning and educating.”

Those who are interested in getting more involved are invited to become a diversity ambassador, participate in a student-led club, or attend the 3rd Annual Saturday Summit on Social Justice (SSSJ), taking place on Saturday, November 2. SSSJ is open to local independent school students in grades 8 through 12, as well as independent school faculty, staff and administrators. SSSJ is free to Masters students and faculty.
