Creativity and Talent on Display

Inspiration struck Skyla Case ’21 while on a trip to Union Square in New York City. She “sat down on a park bench and drew for eight hours and came back the next day and did six more.”

The resulting piece, “August in Union Square,” is on display in the Claudia Boettcher Theatre lobby along with the works of a number of other upper school artists.

The exhibit, which showcases students’ first semester works, includes a range of mediums from drawing and painting to photography and ceramics. “We usually have a ‘work in progress’ exhibit about a month into each semester,” Chair of the Department of Visual Arts Cheryl Hajjar said. She noted that the exhibit was delayed this year due to the unique nature of the school year.

Case, who has three pieces on display, has taken art classes during all four years at Masters, and mostly uses ink and graphite — although she now dabbles in color. The senior shared that “AP Art has pushed my limits and made me into a better artist. Being in a mostly self-driven class has also helped me to think critically about my work and what makes for good composition, which has helped me improve significantly.”

And just like the process of creating art, the show itself will be ever-changing. “It will be an organic exhibit,” Hajjar explained. “As we move along, pieces will come down and new pieces will come up.”
