Winterlight Concert Showcases Musical Talent

From Mozart to Michael Bublé, from Steely Dan to Lizzo, the Winterlight Concert was a treasure trove of musical genres.

Held at the Claudia Boettcher Theatre on Sunday, December 11, the annual concert was an ideal forum for upper school students to share their musical talents with the community.

The performances were all the more joyous for Jennifer Carnevale, chair of the performing arts department, who noted the pandemic had been tough for students and faculty.

“It was beautiful to see our students shining in their element, supporting each other in their musical endeavors,” she said. “COVID hit us hard in performing arts, and last year was the beginning of a concerted effort to recover. We are grateful for the students’ passion, commitment and stewardship that facilitated such rapid regrowth.”

Instrumental and vocal pieces from the String Ensemble, Contemporary Ensemble, Chamber Music, The 1877 Vocal Edition, Tower Singers, The 1877 Delta and Phi Band Editions, Jazz Band, and Dobbs 16 filled the air during the afternoon lineup.

For senior Ryan Guan, who plays the contrabass in the Chamber Music ensemble, the concert provides a window into what fellow music students are doing. “As a classical musician, I am interested in but a novice in rock and jazz, so Winterlight provided me the chance to get to absorb this new knowledge.”

Curt Ebersole, who directs the String Ensemble and Chamber Music, applauded his students for their hard work. “I was pleased with the energy they brought to each ensemble, and especially the overall intonation,” he shared. “In addition, I was so proud to be a part of this large department presentation, which represented so many different types and styles of music.”
