“Handstand” in the Running for National Award

A photo of an impromptu gymnastic stunt — a handstand, to be specific — has resulted in a fresh accolade for Vincent Alban ’19.

Alban, well known in the Masters community for his camerawork, captured the image on a school trip to Senegal, where the group visited with Masters’ partner school. One of the young students at the school requested that Alban take a picture of him doing a handstand. The resulting image, aptly titled “Handstand,” is now in the running for National Geographic’s People’s Choice Competition, having been selected as one of 30 finalists out of a total of over 5,000 submitted photos.

The photo, which was displayed as part of Alban’s recent exhibit in the School’s Fonseca Center, is one of many that he took in Senegal. “I choose this photo from a group of my favorites from the Masters trip to Senegal because it is different from the typical National Geographic photo of distant observing nature,” said Alban. “It shows exploration and genuine engagement with another human.”

His keen eye and photography skills have gotten him this far in the National Geographic competition, but the overall winner will be selected by vote, with the winner being announced in February.
