Panthers Off to Strong Start in Fall Season

The various courts, fields and gyms around The Masters School's campus were once again packed with purple and white as the summer came to a close.
The Panthers kicked off the Fall 2022 athletics campaign with a rigorous and focused preseason, catapulting their varsity programs toward a strong start to the regular season.

"The start of the fall season has been incredibly positive," said Director of Athletics Logan Condon. "We successfully introduced our optional first week of preseason, we had a record number of student-athletes show up for our second week of full preseason, and we currently have the highest fall participation numbers that we have seen in years. On top of all of this, our teams have been practicing and competing at a high level from the start, and this is evident in the results we’ve seen in our initial contests."

Boys soccer — which captured its first-ever New York State Association of Independent Schools championship last fall — didn't skip a beat in its opener, cruising to a convincing 6-0 victory over Léman Manhattan on Friday, September 9 at Greene Family Field. They followed it up with a hard-fought 3-2 loss at Greenwich Academy on Tuesday, September 13. Hanna Schiciano ’23 won her singles match, while the teams of Alexis Estime ’23/Zara Suvanto ’24 and Corinne Furniss ’23/Sydney Starkey ’23 secured wins in their doubles matches. Masters followed up with a 4-1 win over visiting Convent of the Sacred Heart (NYC) on Wednesday, September 14. Schiciano and Estime both won their singles matches, while Carol Quieroz ’24/Suvanto and Furniss/Hannah Raab ’23 edged the competition in doubles.

Girls volleyball rounded out a successful start to the fall season with a pair of wins. Masters, bolstered by a big home crowd, blanked Hewitt School, 3-0, in its opener on Friday, September 9 at the Fonseca Center. They fell, 3-0, to visiting Fieldston on Monday, September 12 but rebounded with a 3-0 sweep of host Léman Manhattan on Wednesday, September 14.
All told, things are trending in a positive direction for the Panthers.
"There is real excitement within our programs, and I look forward to seeing all of the successes our athletes achieve this season," Condon said.
