Varsity Boys Squash Team Perseveres, Shows Flashes

Despite the loss of several key players to graduation, the varsity boys squash team has persevered and flashed its potential thus far in the 2026 season.

"It’s been interesting adapting to a new team," said captain Gus Creech ’26, who serves as the team's No. 1 player. "We have a lot of new players, so I feel like, for me as the captain, my goal is to try and bring everyone together. It’s super important to have good team chemistry because that helps a lot when you’re in a tough, sudden-death point or game. It’s nice to know your teammates have your back."

The Panthers rallied around each other in a convincing 6–1 win over Fieldston on Wednesday, January 7, at the Fonseca Center.

Creech (11-3, 11-3, 11-4), Allistair Camacho ’28 (11-4, 17-15, 11-4), Ben Mason ’26 (11-2, 11-5, 11-3), Eli Miller ’26 (11-4, 11-8, 7-11, 11-4) Derin Barkan ’28 (11-6, 11-6, 11-6) and Jacob Resnick ’26 (11-2, 11-7, 11-4) all recorded victories for Masters.

"I think the key vs. Fieldston was staying focused on the task of winning," Creech said. "Everyone was locked in from the start, and we came in with a clear game plan and stuck to it. Even if the matches were close, people stayed composed and trusted their training."

It was the second victory of the year for Masters, which also recorded a 5-2 win over Hackley to open the season back in December.

"I’m happy with how the season is going, how our guys are composing themselves on and off the court, and the work ethic that everyone brings to practice and games," Creech said.

Masters followed up the Fieldston win with a 7-0 setback to Browning on January 9 and then dropped a hard-fought 4-3 match against Riverdale on January 12. Against Riverdale, Creech (11-2, 11-8, 11-3), Mason (11-9, 11-9, 6-11, 7-11, 11-6) and William Sun ’26 (11-7, 11-6, 11-4) all notched wins for the Panthers, who were without their usual No. 5 and No. 7 players, according to head coach John Boyer.

"Against Riverdale, only Gus was a clear favorite based on ratings," Boyer said. "He played very well and never gave his opponent hope. William (Sun) at number seven was a nice surprise."

Mason, meanwhile, outlasted his opponent in a marathon match that tested the stamina of both players.

"(Mason) kept his emotions in check and played smart and well at the end to close out the match," Boyer said.

Masters hits the court for its next match against host Greens Farms Academy in a Fairchester Athletic Association tilt on January 15. For Creech and the Panthers, the remainder of the season will focus on refining their process.

"Moving forward, my goal is to continue working on our game IQ,” Creech said. “That just means being more thoughtful about our shots on court, how we can conserve our energy, and overall game plan against different opponents. We’re all looking forward to the squash nationals, which will be held in Philadelphia this year, and to what we can accomplish there."
