Varsity Boys Basketball Jumps Into Season

The varsity boys basketball team hit the ground running as it opened its grueling New England Preparatory School Athletic Council campaign this past week.

The Panthers earned a pair of convincing road wins, defeating Greens Farms Academy (GFA), 67–54, on December 3, and Harvey, 69–47, on December 6.

“The boys have been working extremely hard and have been playing together on both ends of the floor,” head coach Joey Kuhl said. “They are an unselfish group, and it shows.”

In the season-opener at GFA, first-year player Damian Mojica ’28, a smooth and versatile forward, paced Masters with 17 points (8/11 FG), 12 rebounds, seven assists and four blocks. Luc Brongniart ’26, a powerful 6-foot-8 forward, added 15 points, while Noah Ferguson ’28 (14 points) connected on three 3-pointers, recorded three blocks and swiped two steals. Jake Toomer ’29 (nine points, eight rebounds) and Omari Levy ’26 (seven points, 13 rebounds, three assists, two blocks) rounded out the production for the Panthers, who jumped out to a commanding 37–29 halftime lead and never looked back.

“We set the tone defensively and attacked the rim,” Kuhl said.

It was more of the same in the matchup against Harvey, which narrowly defeated Masters, 69–67, in last year's meeting between the two teams. The Panthers were a cut above this time around, locking down on the defensive end to secure a 29–15 halftime lead they would never relinquish.

Mojica didn't miss a shot, connecting on all eight of his field goal attempts to record 16 points. He added four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Levy (four rebounds, two steals) also notched 16 points. Brongniart (12 points), Toomer (nine points, 12 rebounds, nine assists, one steal), Ferguson (seven points, three rebounds, three assists) and Zach Stewart ’27 (three points, one charge taken) filled up the stat sheet.

After a hard-fought loss to New York Military Academy on December 10, the Panthers are hosting The Frederick Gunn School on December 12, followed by a road trip to face Berkshire School on December 13.

“We have to keep working hard and getting better each day,” Kuhl said. “It is a long season with a lot of challenging, tough opponents. We need to keep improving to be able to have a chance to achieve our goals.”

Friday's home opener figures to be the highlight of the stretch for the Panthers, who will look for a boost from their purple-clad faithful.

“We are very excited to play at home,” Kuhl said. “We love seeing the stands full and students feeling enthusiasm and pride in their classmates. We hope we can compete and play hard enough against a very talented opponent.”
